Changes of Trisodium Phosphate in Temperature and Wet Environment

trisodium phosphate is a moderately soluble salt with strong water absorption. The extent to which water is absorbed depends not only on the chemical composition of the crystal, but also on the relative humidity of the air.

If the relative humidity of the air is higher, the partial pressure of water vapor in the air is greater than the vapor pressure above the saturated water solution of the pure substance at that temperature, the crystal will absorb water from the environment. On the contrary, crystals lose water. The plastic bags with crystals are placed in the dryer respectively. After 105 days, the water content and crushing results will become pasty wet body.


The water absorption and solubility of crystals depend on temperature. If the vapor pressure on the saturated solution of trisodium phosphate decreases with the increase of temperature while the vapor content in the air remains unchanged, the absorption rate of water in the crystal will be accelerated, the solubility will be increased and the liquid film will be thicker.


When the temperature decreases, the number of crystalline grains increases correspondingly, which leads to the increase of the contact points of agglomeration. For example, if 50 kg of trisodium phosphate with water content of 2% and temperature drops from 40 ~10 ~C, 0.139 kg of salt crystals can be precipitated. These salts can also form 560,000 small crystals, obviously so many particles, such as shape and thickness, when the particle size is quite large (up to 3 mm). We apply the same pressure to the crystal of trisodium phosphate with the same water content at different temperatures and at the same time, but the caking rate and crushing pressure are different.


From the above experimental data, it is known that with the increase of temperature, the caking rate and strength of trisodium phosphate will increase. The more water content, the more serious the caking phenomenon, and the stronger the caking.
