An inorganic material having an acid orthophosphate or a polycondensation phosphate as a main compound and having gelation properties. It is a refractory binder formed by the reaction of phosphoric acid with an oxide or a hydroxide or a base. The binding form of the phosphate binder is a chemical reaction binding or a polymeric bonding. Most of the binders formed by the reaction of phosphoric acid with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal oxides and their hydroxides are gas-hard binders, that is, coagulation and hardening can occur at room temperature without heating. Most of the binders formed by the reaction of phosphoric acid with amphoteric oxides and their hydroxides or acidic oxides are thermosetting binders, that is, they must be heated to a certain temperature to react and then cause condensation and hardening. Phosphate as a binder for refractory materials has a strong bonding strength in the middle and low temperature range before the ceramic bond is produced, and thus is widely used as a binder for amorphous and non-fired refractories.

However, phosphates as refractory binders fall into two categories:

(1) an orthophosphate binder, that is, a binder containing a compound of a phosphorus atom, such as aluminum dihydrogen phosphate (AL(H2PO4)3), aluminum monohydrogen phosphate (Al2HPO4) 3);

(2) A polycondensation phosphate binder, that is, a phosphate compound containing two or more phosphorus atoms, such as sodium tripolyphosphate (Na5P3O10), sodium hexametaphosphate ((NaPO3)6) and the like. The orthophosphate binder can be named according to the compound name, and the following are mainly the following: aluminum phosphate binder, zirconium phosphate binder, magnesium phosphate binder, chromium phosphate binder and complex phosphate binder.
